NYC Veterans’ Experience Research Breakfast
May 15, 2025

On May 15, 2025, LMIS hosted the second event in our Research Breakfast Series. This morning of discussion convened educators, policymakers, and leaders from Veterans-focused programs to explore the findings of survey and focus group research, and their potential applications in higher education and policy settings.
Following opening remarks by Dr. Josh Brumberg, President of the CUNY Graduate Center, the agenda began with LMIS presenting new research on New York City Veterans’ experiences and engagement, followed by a fireside chat between Commissioner James Hendon of the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS) and Jaclyn Kelly, Director of LMIS. Their conversation centered on the importance of honoring Veterans’ full and varied identities, strategies for engaging more local Veterans, and how city agencies can support Veterans in NYC’s unique context. The morning also featured a panel discussion, “Putting Research into Practice in Higher Ed,” moderated by Nicole Orlando, Director of Veteran Transition at DVS, that examined strategies for supporting Veterans in post-secondary education based on the morning’s research insights.
LMIS’ collaboration with DVS is ongoing. More about this research can be found on LMIS’ Supporting New York City Veterans’ Services page.
