As part of our collaboration with Genspace (the world’s first community biology lab), we presented our research on the labor market landscape for entry-level life sciences laboratory work in New York City. Our research used real-time employer demand data to describe the types of jobs available for those starting out in this field, along with information about the skills that employers demand, both for entry-level positions, as well as all life sciences laboratory jobs in NYC. This research is in support of Genspace’s pioneering workforce development program, Break into Biotech, which aims to to open up life sciences careers to those from non-traditional and underrepresented backgrounds.

Our presentation was followed by an exciting and insightful panel on “How To Apply Your Synbio Skills to Biotech,” where three panelists described the ways that they leveraged their diverse, often non-STEM, skillsets to succeed in the field of synthetic biology.
