With support from the CUNY Central “Career Success” initiative sponsored by The Office of Career and Industry Partnerships, LMIS and CP&PD partnered to create a Tableau-based interactive tool for STEM graduate students at the CUNY Graduate Center. This process included conducting research on employer demand for different STEM skills, specialties, and types of workers across the United States, engaging graduate students via a focus group to learn their questions about jobs, and presenting results to students and professionals across CUNY. The final tool provided overviews of employer demand in NYC and nationally for occupations in seven career areas (academic research, business & administration, communication, industry research, law, policy, and teaching) for master’s and PhD-level STEM-focused workers.
“The academic market in many disciplines, including STEM fields, has always been challenging… LMIS provided a much-needed tool using up-to-date labor market and employer demand data across a variety of industries that are relevant to the Graduate Center and CUNY’s Master’s-level and Ph.D. students from STEM departments as they begin their post-graduate career preparation, both in the academic and other job markets.” – Dr. Jenny Furlong, Director, Office of Career Planning and Professional Development, CUNY Graduate Center
